Metanol

Methanol, a colorless, volatile, and flammable liquid with the chemical formula CH3OH, is obtained through the hydrogenation of methane and is commonly used in the petroleum industry for combustion and chemical production. It is also known as methyl alcohol. The properties of methanol and ethanol are quite different. Ethanol has lower toxicity and is more easily metabolized by humans, making its consumption safer. Methanol, on the other hand, is highly toxic and can pose serious health risks, even being lethal. Additionally, ethanol has lower energy density compared to methanol, so more ethanol may be required to provide the same amount of energy. Ethanol has higher miscibility with water, making it easier to store in humid environments. Methanol has various industrial applications, including its use as fuel, in the production of chemicals like formaldehyde, acetic acid, and MTBE, as a solvent in the manufacturing of paints, varnishes, and other industrial products, as antifreeze in vehicle cooling systems, and as a fuel in hydrogen fuel cell technology.
